Zoologists have determined the reason for Flaco’s passing, the much-loved Eurasian eagle-owl that was a resident of New York City and had fled from the Central Park Zoo in February of last year. When Flaco was purportedly involved in a collision with a skyscraper in Manhattan on Friday evening, officials at the zoo reported that he had passed away.

According to a statement released by the Central Park Zoo, the preliminary findings from a necropsy that was carried out by experts from the Bronx Zoo are consistent with his death being the result of an acute traumatic injury.

They discovered significant bleeding under the sternum as well as in the back of the body cavity around the liver, which indicates that the primary impact appears to have been on the body of the owl, which was 13 years old. The only other sign of head trauma that was discovered was a small bit of bleeding behind the left eye, but other than that, there was no further indication of this.

During the necropsy, there were no bone fractures discovered, and his body was assessed to be in good health at the time of his death. He had appropriate fat storage and good muscle mass. Just one year ago, a vandal snuck into the Central Park Zoo while it was dark and cut a hole in Flaco’s steel mesh cage. Since then, Flaco has become a local celebrity in New York City, and he has been able to escape from the zoo.

After Flaco appeared to thrive in the urban wilds of Manhattan, the officials of the zoo originally attempted to reclaim the magnificent owl, but they eventually gave up on their efforts. While he was still a resident at the zoo, his final weight was recorded as 1.9 kilograms, and his necropsy revealed that he weighed 1.86 kilograms.

According to the zoo, additional steps will be required to be done in order to determine any underlying causes that may have had a detrimental impact on Flaco’s health or that may have led to the occurrence of the event.

This procedure will involve “microscopic examination of tissue samples; toxicology tests to evaluate potential exposures to rodenticides or other toxins; and testing for infectious diseases such as West Nile Virus and Avian Influenza,” according to what they have stated. A statement from the Zoo stated that it would take several weeks to finish the results of these tests.

Flaco’s “tragic and untimely death highlights the issue of bird strikes,” according to their statement, which also stated that it is believed that over a quarter of a million birds die every year in New York City as a result of colliding with buildings.

According to the Animal Conservation Society, Flaco was discovered unresponsive on Friday by staff members from the Wild Bird Fund animal rehabilitation center. It is believed that Flaco had collided with a building on West 89th Street in Manhattan. Soon after that, it was determined that he had passed away.

Those in charge of the Central Park Zoo expressed their hope that the individual responsible for severing Flaco’s enclosure would someday face legal consequences.
