After the spring/summer and fall runway shows presented a picture of what to expect in the coming year, the top fashion trends of 2023 are still lining the shelves of retail establishments worldwide. What ought to we purchase?
The 2023 shows have endorsed wearable silhouettes, denim in all its forms, and cargo pants as trends that lean toward the utilitarian this year. That is not to argue that fashion-wise, this year is uninteresting. Silver metallics and dramatic hem lengths are still staples of the fashion scene, if in more wearable forms than in the past. Regarding color, may we finally bid adieu to trendy hot pink and welcome new, exciting hues now that the Barbie movie has opened in theaters? Just remember that this isn’t it at all about Pantone’s color of the year Viva Magenta. Ahead, eight 2023 fashion trends to add to your shopping list from now and until the end of the year.

2023 Fashion Trend: Crochet

Crochet was the most popular trend on the spring/summer 2023 runways, with brands like Gabriela Hearst, Ulla Johnson, and Proenza Schouler showcasing flowy dresses with fringe and open-weave tops. Invest in classic silhouettes and layered items, such as crochet tanks that can be layered over button-down shirts and long-sleeve turtlenecks in the winter, to prolong the appeal of the warm-weather trend.

2023 Fashion Trend: Red

Glossy red colors dominated the Fall 2023 runways for everyone from Tory Burch and Wiederhoeft to Sandy Liang and PatBo. Imagine: Vibrant orange undertones and juicy reds that would work well for accent pieces (handbags, jewelry, and trendy shoes) as well as head-to-toe ensembles (think: pantsuits).

2023 Fashion Trend: Cargo Pants

The 2023 fashion trend of utilitarian clothing paved the way for the cargo pant’s comeback this year. However, these are not the baggy, low-rise pants of the 2000s. This trend translates into fitted silhouettes, unique pocket placements, sophisticated materials like organza and silk, and colors beyond khaki and olive for the warmer months.

2023 Fashion Trend: Transparent Apparel

Since the end of the lockdown, “Bare it all” has been the campaign slogan. 2023 sees the transition of the naked trend from the red carpet, where stars like Rihanna and Cher have been wearing it for years, to street fashion. The once-risqué trend is making a comeback for both weekend wear and workwear, as seen in the frothy frock exposing undergarments at Victoria Beckham and the cellophane-like dress worn over a boldly hued maxi skirt at Tory Burch’s spring 2023 show.

2023 Style Trend: Reimagined Denim

Our excitement for denim trends hasn’t been this high in a long time, from carpenter jeans to double-waisted jeans. Even the most opulent runway designers appear to agree, as they have been showcasing strapless gowns, blouses, and even shoes and undergarments (thigh-high boot-jean hybrids anyone?) made of the material. Choose classic silhouettes and cuts for your wardrobe that will last after the novelty wears off, regardless of the category you choose.

2023 Fashion Trend: Shine For The Daytime

The amount of glitz on the runways for 2023 gives the impression that we are living in the Roaring Twenties. Although sequins tend to become outdated as soon as January 31st rolls around, this year’s designers are arguing for “daytime shine”—wearable separates that can liven up even the most basic staples like blue jeans and tank tops (see above). Although this trend is available in all metallic hues (rose gold, bronze, gold, etc.), we have a soft spot for the look of liquid silver, which also works well as a neutral.

2023 Fashion Trend: Maxi Skirts

Maxi skirts have become popular in 2023 as a reaction to the incredibly impractical miniskirts of 2022. Expect a lot of low-rise, pocket-adorned silhouettes and floor-grazing jean skirts in keeping with the previously mentioned denim and cargo trends. You should also anticipate styles in a variety of prints and unexpected materials, such as velvet. Cheers to long hemlines!

2023 Fashion Trend: Cobalt Blue

Cobalt blue, the most striking color story to emerge from the Spring 2023 runways, has exploded through the collections with the freshness of an early-morning sea mist. It’s the kind of deep blue that will enthrall even the most color-averse people because it’s just vivid enough to make people look twice while remaining subdued enough to wear every day. Bonus points: Viva Magenta by Pantone goes nicely with it.
