NHL playoff standings: Penguins-Capitals impact

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals no longer compete for Metropolitan Division supremacy.

Despite the Capitals' hold on the East's second wild-card berth, the Penguins are still in contention for the Stanley Cup.

The Penguins trail the Capitals by three points with one regulation win heading into Thursday's game (7 p.m. ET, NHL Power Play on ESPN+). Washington has a game over Pittsburgh and the other wild card clubs.

The Penguins will play four teams in playoff position in their final six games after the Capitals game, including the Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders, who are ahead of them in the "vying for the wild card" group.

Four current playoff clubs, the Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres, and nearly eliminated Ottawa Senators are on Washington's final seven-game schedule after Pittsburgh.

Stathletes assigns the Capitals a 52.9% chance of making the playoffs, whether as a wild card or the Metro's No. 3 seed,

and the Penguins 10.2%. Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby's rivalry appears to be alive!

As the regular season winds down, we can check on all the playoff races and the 2024 NHL draft lottery clubs.
