Considering her talk show moving to NYC, Kelly Clarkson can grin again: "A weight lifted"

Kelly Clarkson is a Texan through and through. However, the Fort Worth native is already learning to walk and talk like a New Yorker.

The Grammy-winning singer has moved "The Kelly Clarkson Show" from Los Angeles to New York for its fifth season (which premieres Monday; check local listings).

Clarkson, 41, has been enjoying the city when she is not unpacking boxes, such as cheering for her Dallas Cowboys at

New York Giants game and watching her friend Chelsea Handler do standup at the famed Beacon Theatre.

I'm 40 years old now. Mama rented something lovely." Clarkson says with a giggle, sitting in a studio mere blocks from her talk show's

new location at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. "I was like, 'I'm not living here unless it's right by the park and really nice for the kids.'"

Clarkson has two children with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock: River Rose (9), and Remington (7).

"I'll be honest: I thought I was making a terrible decision," Clarkson admits of her concerns before to the transfer.

"I realized I wanted a fresh start and couldn't stay in LA. I wanted to be in Montana, but you can't really do a program from there right now. So I thought, 'The only other possibility would probably be New York.'"
