Everything we knew about Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has altered since Tom Holland’s Peter Parker first debuted seven years ago.In addition to marking the end of the Avengers as fans knew them, Captain America: Civil War (2016) opened the door for Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In contrast to earlier renditions of the character, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker arrived in the universe with his unique spider abilities already in place and without the traditional Uncle Ben plot. This was a significant departure from the well-known superhero from Marvel origin stories that fans had grown accustomed to.

The live-action Spider-Man story has always revolved around Peter Parker getting bitten by a spider and developing new abilities. This was the case for Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Spider-Man 3 (2007), as well as Andrew Garfield in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). But that was very different for the MCU.Granted, the Spider-Man that the public initially saw in Civil War lacked confidence, but he was still Spider-Man. Holland’s trilogy then demonstrated just how much of a raw hero he was. After being informed that he wasn’t ready to join the Avengers by his future mentor Tony Stark, or Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Peter Parker was shown hanging around New York City in the 2017 Spider-Man film Homecoming, waiting for his next task.

Following Homecoming’s hijinks, Holland starred in two massive ensemble films, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), before making a comeback for his second solo film, Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). Additionally, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) was released to a wildly positive reception in 2021. Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal produced the Spider-Man films. In the MCU, Holland made a comeback as Spider-Man alongside co-stars Zendaya as Michael Jackson and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. In addition, Benedict Cumberbatch played Dr. Stephen Strange, aka Doctor Strange. Notable for incorporating the Multiverse, No Way Home quickly gained popularity by introducing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man personas into the MCU.

For Holland, who was born in New York, however, No Way Home would prove to be bittersweet because, by the time the story ended, everyone had forgotten about him, including his best friend and lover. Holland was left to live alone after being cast out by Doctor Strange and was forgotten by everyone who knew him. This conclusion signaled a significant change for Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since it ultimately put him in the same situation as all the other Spider-Men had encountered early in their careers: hiding their identities and living alone.Watts has now verified that the six movies in which Holland played Spider-Man have served as one of the longest origin stories ever recounted. Watts revealed that No Way Home ends at the beginning in “Spider-Man: No Way Home — The Art of the Movie” (2023). He admits that they intended to take a different approach with Spider-Man in the MCU, such revealing his identity to the entire world and his closest friend, Aunt May (Marisa Tomei). However, this implied that the character would also require a distinct future.

Playing with these new elements was enjoyable. Watts stated (via The Direct) that “in the end, you know, it was nice to be able to have everything coalesce into, at its essence, the simple story of Spider-Man.” “We simply took our time narrating the origin story found in the first issue of “Spider-Man”.”

In relation to this, Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding made a comment about the iconic outfit that Holland dons during his last scenes of the film, when he is spider-slinging over the streets of New York. By doing the exact opposite and forcing Holland’s Spider-Man to undergo a rigorous and early superhero training, the MCU has produced a much more self-assured, formidable, and experienced Spider-Man, one who is also sporting a traditional and Marvel Comics-accurate suit.

Regarding Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, it was recently disclosed that discussions regarding Spider-Man 4 had started, but those talks were halted by the Writers Guild of America strikes. Due to contractual obligations, Marvel and Sony will collaborate on the film once more. It will have a special connection to both Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and the MCU.
