The consumption of recorded music in the United Kingdom increased by 10% in 2023, reaching 182.8 million albums. This represents the ninth consecutive year of annual growth. 179.6 billion streams were achieved by the audio streaming market, which is nearly double the total number of streams achieved in 2018. With an increase of 11.8% to 6.1 million units, vinyl LP sales reached their highest level in more than 30 years. This is the fastest rate of growth for vinyl LP sales this decade. There was a slowdown in the decline of CDs, and approximately 100,000 cassettes were purchased. As the chief executive officer of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), Jo Twist, stated, “While efforts are still being made to achieve full representation for women across the music industry, 2023 has been an outstanding year for women in the Official Charts.” Currently, there is a wider variety of recording artists than ever before who are achieving great success with the support of their respective record labels. The number of weeks that women spent at the top of the Official Singles Chart was higher than in any previous year, and seven of the ten most popular songs were all performed by female artists. This is something that ought to be celebrated, but without becoming complacent, and our efforts in the music industry will continue to make sure that this becomes the standard moving forward.
