I switched from Android to iPhone 15 for a week, and Apple has to improve.

Which side of the divide do you lean toward, the iPhone or the Android? Although I frequently evaluate mobile phones and carry one of each with me at all times, my SIM card is presently inserted into a Pixel device—specifically, the Pixel 8 Pro. Certainly, it did…While I have conducted reviews of iPhones (most recently, the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro), my daily personal usage has been Android phones for years, with the exception of reviewing purposes. I appreciate the platform’s adaptability and personalization, which enables me to address deficiencies or add my own touch through the use of third-party applications and tools in a manner that is simply not possible on the iPhone.

Furthermore, it exhibits unquestionably superior interoperability with a broader range of devices and operating systems, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, Windows PCs, and other Android phones and tablets. File management on Android also provides enhanced versatility and control (don’t get me started).

I am, nevertheless, frequently intrigued by the prospect of experiencing life with greater wholeheartedness on the opposing side of this divide. Am I able to wholeheartedly adopt Apple’s smartphone at this time, or will I regret the Android operating system too much? In contrast, what obstacles might I encounter and which elements of the iPhone and iOS experience would be more to my liking?

It may appear that a decline is warranted from the most modest of Apple’s finest iPhones of 2023 to the most recent and greatest Pixel 8 Pro from Google. However, based on initial observations, the iPhone 15 appears and feels like an exceptionally high-end device in its own regard.

Although lacking the titanium frame found in its Pro-branded counterparts, this device’s frosted glass back and meticulously rounded aluminum exterior appear equally, if not more, premium in comparison to the Pixel, and in some angles even more so. With the addition of the Action button to the Pro models, tolerances are stringent, the contoured front and back glass are a pleasure to manipulate, and I made a point of savoring that tactile alert slider, as it will likely not be around for much longer.

Additionally, it is advantageous that, in contrast to each preceding iteration of the iPhone, I was not required to replace the cables that were already present at my workplace, bedside, in my bag, and in my vehicle. Although Apple may not have been pleased with the decision to switch to USB-C for the iPhone 15 series, it is unquestionably a success for consumers and likely facilitates the transition to iPhone for Android users who are on the fence.

WhatsApp has historically been the greatest obstacle preventing me from going all-in on the iPhone, and extensive research indicates that my concerns regarding the transition process remain very real. Although transferring conversations and media from one Android device to another is relatively straightforward, migrating to an iPhone requires more stringent requirements, despite the availability of Apple’s Move to iOS Google Play Store application. In my case, the transition from an iPhone to Android is even more difficult.

Transferring WhatsApp from an Android device to another Android device, or from an iPhone to another iPhone, is possible at any time and in any condition (provided that the receiving device has sufficient storage space). When moving in either direction across platforms, the process becomes more complicated; in both scenarios, the receiving phone must not have been configured.Although I had no qualms about resetting the iPhone I had already configured in order to test WhatsApp on iOS, I quickly realized that reverting to Android at the conclusion of the experience would be nearly impossible, unless I were to reset the Pixel that had been by my side for months.

Requiring such actions would have necessitated the reactivation of individual cards in Google Wallet, the revalidation of banking applications, the loss of game save states, smart home configurations, automations, and routines, in addition to the need to ensure the secure backup of lost files and media. Furthermore, that proved to be an excessively burdensome inconvenience for a testing period of merely one week on the iOS side.

Consequently, although I commuted daily on the iPhone, I exclusively utilized Android for accessing WhatsApp. This will alter as soon as the process of transferring data from the chat application between the two operating systems becomes as straightforward as it is between devices operating on the same operating system.

Prior to actually carrying the iPhone around, I was also required to place a case on it. It baffles me that individuals who pay $800 or more prefer to use their smartphones without a case, assuming they are concerned with maintaining the device’s appearance. Apple emphasizes the iPhone’s durability, and while its IP-certified bodywork and Ceramic Shield may be the most robust available, I am also concerned with preserving the exquisite finish that Apple designers evidently spent a great deal of time perfecting, just as I would with any high-priced Android phone (including the Pixel).

I reserve the indulgence of removing the case and operating the phone without an outer shell for my home, where the carpet is plush and the furnishings are plush. In the great beyond, I believe that one of the finest iPhone 15 cases is an absolute necessity.
