What is dragon fruit?
Dragon fruit is a tropical fruit endemic to Southern Mexico and Central America. It’s also called pitaya, pitahaya, and strawberry pear. It has a distinct flavor that reminds me of melon or kiwi. The outside of the fruit is a vivid pink with hints of light green (thus the dragon moniker). The inside of the fruit is usually white with black seeds, but it can sometimes be bright pink. It’s high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. I may sometimes find fresh dragon fruit at the grocery store depending on the season, but I usually buy frozen dragon fruit, especially for smoothies.

Dragonfruit Health Benefits
Dragon fruit is a nutritious powerhouse, with few calories but a high concentration of vitamins and minerals. Here are some amazing health advantages of dragon fruit (source):

High in fiber, which can help manage blood sugar levels and promote feelings of fullness.
High in vital vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron. It also provides healthy plant chemicals such as polyphenols, carotenoids, and betacyanins.
Antioxidants can help reduce inflammation and protect cells from harm.
It contains prebiotics, which help to promote beneficial bacteria in your gut.
It has immune-boosting qualities due to its high content of vitamin C and carotenoids.

Ingredients and Substitutions
Almond milk is the liquid base for this smoothie. I prefer unsweetened vanilla almond milk for added taste, but you may use any other plant-based milk. My second choice would be oat milk, which adds creaminess, but feel free to substitute your preferred dairy-free milk. If you do not want to use milk, you can substitute water, coconut water, or orange juice as the liquid base for this smoothie.
Dragon fruit – For this smoothie, I used Pitaya Foods frozen dragon fruit cubes, which are normally found in grocery stores’ freezer areas. If you can’t find the cubes, you can substitute frozen smoothie packets.
Banana – Frozen banana provides creaminess and natural sweetness. You can follow my instructions on how to freeze bananas for smoothies. If you don’t like bananas, see below for some alternative ideas.

Vanilla protein powder is the primary source of protein. I personally enjoy Nuzest protein powder. It is vegan, contains few ingredients, and tastes excellent. (Use the coupon eating bird food to get 15% off your order). However, feel free to use your preferred brand of protein powder.
Almond butter is a source of healthful fats and a delicate nutty flavor. Feel free to replace it with another nut or seed butter of your choosing.

How To Make

This dragon fruit smoothie recipe does not get much easier!

Combine all of the ingredients in a high-powered blender and process until smooth.

Taste and adjust the consistency as needed, using ice for a thicker smoothie and additional liquid for a thinner smoothie.

How To Make This Smoothie Without Banana
The frozen banana in this recipe provides the smoothie with a thick and creamy texture while also adding a hint of sweetness that isn’t overpowering. If you want a low-sugar option, are allergic to bananas, or just don’t like them, here are some alternatives:

Swap the frozen banana for another frozen fruit, such as mango, pineapple, or berries.
Replace the frozen banana with around 1 cup of ice. It will give the smoothie body a beautiful frozen slushy texture.
Frozen milk. Ice cubes – The same idea, but instead of conventional ice cubes, prepare frozen cubes with your preferred non-dairy milk (such as almond or coconut milk) and use around 1 cup of these instead of the frozen banana.
Frozen cauliflower rice – I frequently use frozen cauliflower rice in smoothies as a low-sugar alternative to frozen bananas. I find that it provides a different texture to smoothies, especially when used in large quantities. I’d start with 1/4 cup, taste the smoothie, and add more as needed.

Avocado – Fresh (or frozen) avocado is an excellent substitute for the creamy texture that bananas bring to smoothies.
Frozen zucchini, like frozen cauliflower, is a wonderful low-sugar substitute for frozen bananas. It also doesn’t offer much flavor! You can blanch or steam your zucchini before freezing to make it more digestible, but I don’t think it’s necessary.

Other Ways to Add Protein
If you don’t have protein powder on hand or don’t want to use it, here are some additional ways to get protein into your smoothie.

Smoothie

Greek yogurt: Incorporate 1/2 cup plain full-fat Greek yogurt into your smoothie. This will provide roughly 10-15 grams of protein, depending on the brand you choose.
Cottage cheese: Place 1/4-1/2 cup cottage cheese in your blender. This will add approximately 7-14 grams of protein.
Chopped nuts or seeds, as well as additional nut butter, are an excellent method to boost the protein content of your smoothies. Some alternatives are chia seeds, hemp seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, and cashews. If you are allergic to nuts, you can use seed kinds of butter such as sunflower seed butter or tahini.
