Deion Sanders of Colorado criticizes NBA superstars for ‘ducking’ mismatches while visiting Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers.

The legendary Deion Sanders spoke to the Philadelphia 76ers as they begin training camp in Colorado. More specifically, Sanders, now the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, delivered a crucial message to reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid.

Sanders mentioned his appreciation for superstar matches in sports while speaking to the 76ers at a banquet. Sanders used Michael Jordan as an example, claiming the Chicago Bulls star “wanted that smoke.”
Sanders then shifted his focus to Embiid and Denver Nuggets player Nikola Jokic, who have been vying for the MVP award in recent years. Sanders stated that if a game is labeled as Embiid vs. Jokic, that is what he expects to see when the game begins.

“A lot of people are avoiding that smoke right now,” Sanders remarked. “On paper, they want to be Tarzan. Don’t sell me a game that tells me what I’m going to get when I turn on the TV. Then I turn on the television, and I don’t get it. That bothers me. I want to see Embiid vs. the Joker if he’s playing the Joker. I adore the pairing. I’d like to see it. That is why I stayed awake. I don’t have time for anyone else to be on the Joker. I’m going to watch the BET Awards.”

Embiid was noticeably absent from a game between the Nuggets and the 76ers late last season due to a chronic calf problem. Perhaps Sanders was teasing Embiid about the incident in order to motivate him for similar battles in 2023-24.

“If Embiid’s playing the Joker then I wanna see that,” Sanders stated.

Will Embiid heed Sanders’ request? The only way to know is to wait and see. After all, Embiid is notorious for missing numerous regular-season games.

Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the son of Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders, added 393 yards and two touchdowns through the air in a 36-14 victory over Nebraska on Saturday. The younger Sanders even did the “Deion Shuffle” while celebrating one of the game’s touchdowns, just as his father did during his long playing career.

The No. 22 signal-caller Colorado wasn’t afraid to defend the elder Sanders after the game, either. During his postgame press conference, Shedeur took aim at first-year Nebraska coach Matt Rhule, saying Rhule offered extra motivation for the Buffs due to comments he made in the offseason that looked critical of the way Deion was rebuilding and advertising the Colorado program.

“The coach said a lot of things about my dad and the program, but now he wants to act nice,” Sanders said after the win. “I don’t respect you because you despised another man.” That is not something you should do. It was merely that all respect for them and their program had vanished. I enjoy playing against their defensive coordinator [Tony White], but there is no respect because [Rhule] mistreated us initially.”
Shedeur is responding to remarks made by Rhule in April that appeared to be intended at Colorado and Coach Prime. Though Rhule did not name Sanders or the program, he mocked other institutions that were establishing a name for themselves on the “transfer portal” and “hype,” pointing out how his program handled business in a more traditional manner.

“I hear other schools [say] they can’t wait for today, the transfer portal, they can’t wait to go out. … I can’t wait to coach my guys, let me tell you that,” Rhule stated. “I’m not here … I’m not thinking about anybody else but this team out here.”

“If you notice in our videos that we post — and I’m proud to post those — they’re always of us working,” Rhule continued. “They’re never of us talking. [This] program is built on work; it’s not built on hype.”

After Saturday’s match, there didn’t appear to be any bad blood between Deion and Rhule. Before fans flooded the field in Boulder, Colorado, Rhule rushed over to shake Sanders’ hand. In a press conference ahead of the nonconference match, he even directly praised Sanders.

Sanders’ team, on the other hand, is 2-0, while Rhule and Nebraska are 0-2.
