Talking to Oprah Winfrey, he said that he and Gomez occasionally had to slip out the back door of venues to avoid being recognized by paparazzi and hundreds of admirers. He said, “I never make her separate from me [because] I don’t ever want her to feel like I’m ashamed of her.”

He said, “I feel like a lot of guys do that, especially in the business,” stating, “they don’t want to be seen with [their girlfriend], so they’ll make them ride in separate cars and do all that getaway stuff.”


“[But] if we get away,” he continued, “we’re getting away together.”

The couple first broke up in early November 2012, over two years after they had originally been together. They had spent months refuting reports that their romance was gone.

“About a week ago, she ended their relationship,” an insider informed PEOPLE at the time. “Being so far apart made things complicated. She struggled with trust. Although it’s difficult, the relationship has to stop.”

A few days later, the two were seen out to dinner together, but it didn’t seem to spark anything more.
